Songliao Basin, located in Northeast China, is a large sedimentary basin covering an area of over 100,000 sq. miles.   Songliao Basin extends over four Chinese provinces: Heilongjiang in the north, Liaoning in the south, Jilin in the center, and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in the west.

Located in the Songliao Basin is the Daqing Oil Region, China’s largest oil region in terms of proven hydrocarbon reserves and annual production.   Daqing was once wilderness.  In 1958, large-scale oil exploration activity was first undertaken in the Songliao Basin.  In September 1959, the No. 3 Songji Exploration well near Datong was the first to yeild oil of commercial value.  As it was shortly before the 10th Anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the oil field was named Daqing Oilfield, literally meaning Great Celebration.  Daqing Oil Field has since been a mainstay in China's energy industry.

Today, Daqing Oil Region remains China's most prolific and largest crude oil producing area and the world's fourth most productive oil field, with a total production of over 10 billion barrels since 1960.

Pacific Asia Petroleum’s Shaogen project is located in Chifeng City in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, adjacent to the Songliao Basin.
